You Found Waldo in 3D!
That's a wrap! Huge thanks to Bookmarks and all the local businesses who welcomed Waldo with open arms during our spatial display run. Below is a look back at how we brought the scene to life in true 3D depth.

How it Worked Without Glasses
The screen inside the custom frame was a Looking Glass Go — a compact spatial light-field display. Instead of sending one flat image to both eyes like a normal phone or TV, it projects dozens of perspective views simultaneously through a micro-lenticular lens.
As viewers walked past the display, their left and right eyes caught slightly different perspectives, creating real depth and horizontal parallax without requiring 3D glasses!
Capturing the Scene
Some of the images featured were converted 2D images, while others were true light-field captures with genuine spatial occlusion. To capture Waldo and Wenda in true 3D space, we used a specialized multi-view workflow:
- Multi-Angle Capture: Photographing the subjects across a horizontal track to gather parallax data.
- 3D Spatial Reconstruction: Converting multiple angles into a light-field depth map.
- Spatial Rendering: Outputting a quilt matrix that projects 3D depth directly into the Looking Glass display.
- Quilts & Blocks: Once a quilt was rendered, we embedded it into a Looking Glass "Block" playlist. Here is an interactive example of the spatial Block:
