How it Works Without Glasses
The screen in the frame is a Looking Glass Go - a compact spatial light-field display. Instead of sending one flat image to both eyes like a normal phone or TV, it projects dozens of perspective views simultaneously through a micro-lenticular lens.
As you walk past the window, your left and right eyes see slightly different perspectives, creating real depth and horizontal parallax without 3D glasses!
Capturing the Scene
Some of the images are converted 2D images. Others are true lightfield images with true occlusion! To capture Waldo and Wenda in true 3D space for these views, we used a specialized multi-view workflow:
- Multi-Angle Capture: Photographing the subjects across a horizontal track to gather parallax data.
- 3D Spatial Reconstruction: Converting multiple angles into a light-field depth map.
- Spatial Rendering: Outputting a quilt matrix that projects 3D depth directly into the Looking Glass display.
- Quilts: Once we create a quilt, we create a Block and sync a playlist of Blocks to the Go. A Block can be embedded in a page, and can be viewed as desired with a Looking Glass attached to your PC. Here is a Block example:
